The 2nd week of July will be the first none-trading week for Wendy Bakes.
In the grand scale of things, looking back at the first 6 months of growing the business, I have to say if you had asked me in January where I thought I would be, I am not sure I could have hoped for much than where I am today!
Not a week has gone by where I haven't made at least 3 bakes, and for the majority of weeks I have done double that or more. Not bad for a business which has a fairly niche target market and is relying on a very small supply area. Well done me!
There have been a couple of tell-tale signs that business is blooming. When I first started out, supply was so small, most of my shopping was done in standard supermarket quantities. Now I am a Makro regular. Sugar comes in sacks not bags, and I buy 20 blocks of butter at a time. My collection of baking tins is ever growing - initially I was buying one tin at a time, now everything is in duplicate at the very least. Apart from the bundt tin...that baby is collecting dust! I have also had to buy more aprons...some days are two apron days, and I often have 5 apron weeks. The laundry wasn't keeping up with the demand. And the real clincher...I had to put new batteries in my scales!!!
The worst thing about business growing? My ingredients cupboard is groaning under the weight, and its like a game of tetras trying to put everything away!!! I might have to expand my shelving very soon! That sounds like a good excuse to start lusting after some storage-porn!
So the oven is going off, and we are off to the seaside for a week. Going to eat someone else's cakes for a few days...all in the name of research of course!
