This week I had my inspection by Environmental Health, and I am pleased to report I have been awarded a 5 star rating. Maybe I would be less keen on writing this post if that had not been the case...luckily we will never know!
After my initial registration with the local authority, and being told I could expect a visit in the new year, I actually ended up contacting them again and requesting that they come and see me sooner rather than later. I know some people might think I am mad to actively invite an inspection as I know they fill some people with fear and dread - but for me I felt the lack of rating was an obstacle in the path to the continued growth of Wendy Bakes, so my attitude was very much 'bring it on'.
Whilst she was very knowledgeable and very professional, the inspector was predominantly friendly and advisory. I never felt like she was looking for 'faults', or looking for ways to mark me down, but rather she encouraged me to show-case all the procedures I have established to make my food business safe and hygienic.
Because Wendy Bakes focuses on making products without gluten, and accommodating other intolerances, this is an additional layer of product control over and above the hygiene food safety rules which every business should follow. My rules are 'tight' to keep my customers safe - and I appreciated having another pair of eyes look over my procedures to confirm I am doing everything I can.
So, I guess what I am saying is 'Don't fear the Inspector'. From my experience, they are there to help ensure we are preparing food in the way which we should. And at the end of the day, isn't that what we are all aspiring to do?
The sticker has gone up in my window with pride. I have posted it on my social media, and I am thinking of getting a T-shirt printed! Flying the flag for a job well done. Congratulations hygienic me!
